The process of adoption then proceeds one step at a time. Remember that adoption is a legal process, so you can’t miss a step. That is why you can feel comfortable knowing one of our experienced social workers will by your side throughout your adoption journey.

Here is a broad overview of the steps. Of course, we will provide more detailed explanation when you first contact us.

1. Free Adoption Orientation.  Free adoption orientations provide introductory information about the adoption process. Whether you are ready to start the adoption process or you are just starting to explore adoption as a way of building your family, the orientation will answer many of your questions.
   
2. Application Process. The application process requires you to fill out specific forms. Many of these are available online or we will mail the forms to you.
   
3. Homestudy Education. This is crucial so each potentially adoptive parent understands the special issues associated with adoption. This education is required by the State of Ohio for all prospective adoptive parents in order to obtain an approved homestudy. Some class topics included are: The Adoption Process, The Legal Process, Openness, Creative Parenting & Discipline, Talking About Adoption, Culture, Typical Child Development and Predictable Stages of Development of the Adopted Child.
4. The Homestudy.  The homestudy is completed by an Adoption Connection licensed social worker who is your support, your advocate and available to give you professional advice as a certified Adoption Assessor.  This step requires interviews with you, including individual and couple interviews as well as other members of your household. You don’t have to be the “perfect parent”, but willing to love and learn.
