Dear Birthparent,
Hi! Our names are Brian and Kelleen and we are super excited to become parents one day… and we hope that one-day comes real soon. We thought it would be great to write our letter from a child’s perspective since we feel that openness, including pictures and letters, is very important. We think the letter would go something like this:
“Hi Birthmom! How are you? I’m doing well and I’m happy. My mom and dad are really great people and I love them very much. I want to thank you for choosing an adoption plan for me, as I know it was a very difficult decision for you to make. From the day I was born, Mom and Dad have shown me nothing but love and affection. They told me that they couldn’t wait to have a baby and the day they got the call from the agency letting them know you picked them was the day that they had dreamed of. Once the hospital gave everyone the all clear, Mom and Dad brought me home. I know, I don’t ‘technically’ remember the day, but my parents often tell me the story at bedtime. It’s through all of the stories that I feel as if I actually remember it.
We live in a nice Cincinnati neighborhood filled with cool old houses on a street lined with giant oak and maple trees. Our neighborhood has lots of families
and my friends and I are always outside playing or riding bikes. It makes things very fun and exciting to live here.
I don’t have any brothers or sisters yet, but we do have two awesome pets, one dog and one cat. They can’t wait for me to get home everyday! My cat Tex likes to weave in and out of my legs and my dog Abbey is so excited to see me that she wags her tail a million miles an hour. I love to snuggle up on the couch with Tex while reading a book and to take Abbey for walks with Mom and Dad. Tex and Abbey have become my very best friends!
I’m glad you chose my parents. My mom is very sweet. She loves to laugh and always wants to make other people smile. She grew up on the West Side of Cincinnati with her parents and older brother. Mom has good values and a strong belief in God. She likes to spend time outdoors, going shopping, and taking photos of me playing soccer. We have lots of fun doing art projects and going to the movies. And when I’m not feeling well, Mom is always there to help me feel better.
Besides being a great mom, she works as an Art Director for a marketing firm in town. She creates advertising campaigns for clients including designing logos, printed pieces and websites. I think it’s pretty cool that she gets to be creative all day, but I know it can be very hard work. All of this couldn’t have been done if she hadn’t gone to college and earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design.
My dad is a cool, genuine, funny guy. He has a way of saying hilarious things when you least expect it. Besides being a very hard worker at his job,
Dad loves to spend time with our family. Whether it’s sitting down to help me with my homework or shooting hoops in the backyard, he is always there. It makes me feel really special.
Dad grew up in a small town in Northeast Ohio with rolling hills and lots of farms. We make it back to spend time with my grandparents several times a year. These visits usually include a trip to Amish country to pick up some homemade baked goods (yum), hanging out with our family and celebrating the holidays with grandma, grandpa, my aunt, uncle and cousins.
Dad works as a Vice President for a bank and lends money to businesses. He has a Bachelors Degree in Economics and a Masters of Business Administration Degree. I can’t wait to go to college so I can be just like my mom and dad.
Whether it’s going to Church on Sunday or catching a Reds game in the summer, doing things as a family is very important to us. We also like to celebrate birthdays and my adoption day with our grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Holidays are awesome. Thanksgiving is at our house and we all help make the big meal. Mom and Dad really like to cook together and I set the table and whatever else they need help with. Christmas is even better! Not only do we get to open presents at our house on
Christmas morning, but Santa also leaves presents at both of my grandparent’s houses.
After Christmas, vacation is my favorite time of year. Mom and Dad like to travel and we’re always going to fun and adventurous places. They have been on some cool trips like: exploring the Greek islands, snorkeling in Belize, hiking in the rainforests in Costa Rica and skiing out West. I hope that dad will teach me how to ski soon!
I’m really glad that you are in my life too. The openness with the pictures and letters has been great and this is something very important to my family and me. It has helped me understand who I am today. Thank you!”
This is how we imagine our child might describe their life to you. We welcome the opportunity to meet, talk about the type of life that you can expect for your child and the level of openness in the adoption that would work best for everyone involved. Again, thank you for allowing us to share our story with you.
Warmest regards,
Brian & Kelleen
